USADF's Burundi Program

USADF re-established it program in Burundi after some 14 years.  Marginalized people in Burundi include groups of widows-headed households, orphans, people living with HIV/AIDS, returnees or repatriates, handicapped persons, elderly persons, poor people. They are not educated and do not have even access to vocational training. Many of them are agro-laborers depending on agriculture and contribution from manual/daily labor activities. They also face food insecurity because of insufficient land.  With even a short drought in the country those people are forced to migrate and are separated from family and community support structures that help mitigate these challenges. Drought and internal migration is frequently observed in North especially in Muyinga and Kirundo provinces. Those groups also do not have access to: the basic health needs, credit, own livestock, good housing conditions, water and sanitation. They are facing malnutrition problems resulting from poor diet, food sources and insufficient food stocks available for the households. USADF will be exploring grant projects with groups of albino Burundians and the Batwa ethnic group.
