USADF's Mauritania Program

USADF signed a country accord with the government of Mauritania in April 2008.  USADF programs in Mauritania focus on economic development grants for underserved and marginalized populations.

Women are the family backbone. Yet, they remain underpaid for their work and get low revenues for their activities. They are also culturally and socially marginalized because of their gender and have no political power in the traditional structure.

Former slaves and other marginalized castes have limited political power to voice their concerns and needs. Returning refugees also to get their full citizenship back.

As part of the new Sahel initiative, at least half of the programming in 2011 will be directed toward sites in the Sahel region. The Sahel encompasses most of the southern and eastern portion of the country, starting as a wide swath with the city of Tidjikja (Tagant Region) in the north to the southern border with Senegal.  Other important regions include: Trarza, Gorgol, Brakna, Tagant, Guidimakha, and the Assaba.
